Selection and Optimization Criteria

Perhaps more than any other, this chapter illustrates the challenge in obtaining materials with superior thermoelectric properties. A thorough understanding of solid- state physics and chemistry is required to define the potential of a particular system. The incorporation of different transport phenomena in evaluating the underlying transport mechanisms is illustrated.
