Asset management strategy as Denver international airport approaches twenty-years-old

Denver International Airport (DEN) opened on Feb 28, 1995, and remains the newest large international hub airport in the United States nearly twenty years later. As DEN now moves from its teens to its twenties, it will begin to face similar increased maintenance demands and resource allocation decisions as its more mature peers. To more effectively manage this transition to long-term capital planning, airport leaders and maintenance staff developed an asset management strategy for the airport's facilities, infrastructure, and capital equipment. This paper explores the steps DEN is following to implement its asset management program, presenting examples of its successes, challenges, and lessons learned. This paper also discusses the airport's goal of becoming an Asset Management Center of Excellence in the North American aviation industry.
