Neogene structural styles of the NW Black Sea region, offshore Romania

The northwestern corner of the Black Sea (offshore Romania) is the only proven, developed, and producing oil province in the Black Sea (Figure 1). Production started about 20 years ago; today, more than 30,000 barrels per day of oil equivalent are produced from pre-Oligocene (Cretaceous-Eocene) reservoirs. The pre-Oligocene reservoirs are also productive in a few other hydrocarbon provinces of the Black Sea (Gulf of Odessa, offshore Bulgaria, and offshore Turkey) but only for dry gas. All developed hydrocarbon fields in the Black Sea are on the modern shelf.
