Connected Traveler - Toward the Field Testing of a Mobile Multi-Modal Traveler Information System

2010
Providing better information to the public is an important way to improve the transportation system. There is, however, a gap in the quality of the information of current transportation information systems. Inspired by the ubiquitous wireless communication network, the Connected Traveler project along the US-101 corridor in the San Francisco Bay Area, aims to provide reliable real-time information to the travelers. We briefly outlined the design of the system. Major enabling technologies that help to generate personalized, real-time information with better situation awareness are also introduced, to include the GPS fusing algorithm and a framework of scenario parsing based on the GPS location data. The system is currently under pilot testing and will be launched to the public for a field test starting from August 2010.
