CULTURE,MORPHOLOGY AND PROLIFERATION OF THREE TYPES OF HUMAN PERIODONTAL CELLS

2003
Objective:To study the morphology, growth pattern, proliferative activity and other biological characteristics of the three types of cells which comprise the majority of cells in periodontium. Methods:Human gingival fibroblasts(GFs),periodontal ligament cells(PDLCs) and alveolar bone cells (ABCs) were isolated, cultured and subcultured.Cell morphology and growth pattern were observed under reverse microscope and cell proliferation was assayed using MTT method. Results:Though they were the same fibroblast like cells under the microscope, they showed different proliferative activity in vitro. The proliferation of GFs was higher than that of PDLCs and ABCs ( P 0 01).Conclusion:Because they were derived from different anatomical location and did not show the same biological characteristics in vitro, they may play different roles in vivo.
