Pholi (Wild Safflower)

2020
Abstract Pholi (wild safflower, Carthamus oxycantha) belongs to the genus Carthamus and family Asteraceae. It is an erect, bushy, medium-sized annual weed found in different crops of arid or semiarid regions. It resembles the only cultivated species Carthamus tinctorius (safflower), also used as an herb in different parts of the world. The extent of the chemical constituents varies slightly due to different geographic and climatic conditions. The oil extracted from the seeds can be used as a potential source for biodiesel production and for edible purpose. All parts of pholi have a wide pharmaceutical, biological, and nutritional importance. Further research is needed to evaluate the different biologic activities of wild safflower that has proven to be as effective as the cultivated specie (safflower).
