An Application of Kinect-Based 3D Scanning in Mechanical Engineering

During last decades, many techniques for CAD/CAM have been applied to industries. For stage of the product design process one can choose the suitable tools for making this process easier and faster. Nonetheless, most of them, both for hardware-based and software-based solutions, are expensive. This paper approaches the study on the use of a low-cost Kinect v2 device for 3D scanning of mechanical parts. Firstly, the influence of scanning factors on the Kinect-based system is considered. Secondly, in the mechanical part modeling process using the Kinect v2 device, the captured depth maps is improved. Finally, an experimental methodology for 3D scanning of mechanical parts is report.
