R.K. Narayan’s novels have had a lukewarm reception in the West, not for lack of literary value, but because they have not been fully understood. In the present literary scenario, the upsurge of Indian writers enhances the literature produced in English due to its exquisite use of the English language and its literary quality. It is now, therefore, the right time to revisit the literature written by its predecessors, at a time when the exoticism of the Oriental matter was in vogue in English literature through the mesmerizing and marvellous descriptions of writers such as Foster or Kipling, who offered a biased image of the reality of India.
