Surrounded by Pit Lakes: New Landscapes After Lignite Mining in the Former German Democratic Republic

This contribution is providing a personal perception of pit lakes in the lignite mining districts of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). In addition, it provides selected facts and a condensed summary on what has been done and achieved since the 1990s to shape the impressive pit lake landscapes that nowadays comprise more than 50 large unique pit lakes.
