Satellite image display and processing with microcomputers: a proof-of-concept for the Navy Oceanographical Data Distribution System (NODDS).

1991
Abstract : The capabilities of small, primarily single-user computers have increased to the point where serious attention to the use of these systems as image display and processing stations is warranted. The addition of satellite display and processing to the existing Navy Oceanographic Data Distribution System (NODDS) can represent significant enhancement to the forecasting mission of Naval Oceanography Command Detachments and Facilities. This thesis outlines and demonstrates an approach to adding image functions to NODDS. Software has been written to display Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) visual and infrared images within the NODDS software environment. Routines have also been developed to provide enhancement of the imagery. The requirements for communicating the imagery are addressed and supported by the testing of image transfer times. Finally, plans for system improvement and operational implementation are discussed. Satellite Images, Interactive processing systems, Image processing, Oceanographic data systems.
