How Diversity and Inclusion Strategies Enhance Organizational Readiness for Global Nursing Recruitment

2020
Facing persistent shortages of qualified nurses, Baystate Health partnered with a staffing firm to bring 30 RNs from 10 countries to western Massachusetts. Nurses had passed the licensure exam, demonstrated command of English, and held valid green cards, giving them permanent US residency status. Baystate focused on diversity and inclusion implications, anticipating potential roadblocks to success, and maximizing the value of the international nurses. Prior to the international nurses’ arrival, existing staff were informed and surveyed on their perceptions; based on those perceptions, targeted cross-cultural training was developed and delivered. The effectiveness of the program is being assessed before expansion.
