The invention discloses a method for breeding early maturing japonica rice. The method comprises the following steps: processing a target rice seed employing a low-dosage electron beam; carrying out field single planting, selecting a single rice plant which is early in mature period of a heading stage, excellent in plant type and high in ripening rate, and carrying out generation-adding planting; preferentially selecting germplasm which is more premature than a control strain according to the target character; and carrying out planting and screening for 5-6 generations, so as to obtain the early maturing japonica rice variety. According to the breeding method disclosed by the invention, the damages to seeds are relatively light; regeneration of a plurality of random and bad mutations can be effectively avoided; the workload of offspring screening is greatly relieved; the bred new variety of japonica rice has the advantages of being early to sow, early to mow, and good in late sowing resistance; the total growth period is shortened by about 30 days in comparison with that of a control group; the time-to-market of the new rice is advanced; and the method has great significance on enhancement of rice production safety and disaster preparedness and mitigation.
