Biochar as a sorbent for organic and inorganic pollutants

2021
Abstract This chapter provides information on the sorption of organic and inorganic pollutants on biochar. Biochar addition to soil has significant effects on the removal of contaminants. Unique characteristics of biochar allow it to remediate and alleviate serval contaminants from the contaminated environments. Various mechanisms and factors are involved in the sorption of both organic and inorganic pollutants on biochar. Careful selection and tactical application of biochar to contaminated soils can provide environmental benefits by lowering the toxicity risk of heavy metals. Fundamental environmental concerns can be decreased by reducing the availability of toxic organic and inorganic contaminants, which can be reached through a variety of mechanisms following biochar application. Biochar application and implications on soil need careful attention, particularly when using a specific biochar for remediation of a specific pollutant.
