2019 - Advances in lidar-based control

This report contains the current status of the work performed by the NACOR consortium on lidar-based feedforward load alleviation within the work package CS2-AIR-WP4.2.1. At the end of 2019 the status can be summarized as follows: - The surrogate lidar sensor simulation models and the wind reconstruction algorithm are tested and ready. The numerical values for the surrogate model need to be determined for each lidar sensor configuration. - The development of a new physics-based end-to-end simulation framework permitting to determine the values for the parameter of the surrogate lidar model based on the physical sensor characteristics has started this year. This simulation framework will lead to a significantly improved representativeness of the overall results. - The progress on the definition of the control design methodology for the feedforward load alleviation is progressing well and is now around 90%, compared to 50% at the end of last year. This methodology is presently being adapted for the Generic BizJet Aircraft model (GBJA) and is expected to be finalized and validated in the first half of 2020. All these activities contribute to the development of a complete set of simulations tools and control design methodologies for a complete lidar-based gust load alleviation system to be designed and evaluated. The work performed so far already permitted to identify several design features which can be significantly improved compared to the system designed and demonstrated during the FP5 AWIATOR project, in addition to the evolution of the various underlying technologies since AWIATOR.
