The Evolution of the Relationship between Russia and Uzbekistan and Its Influencing Factors

2014
It has been more than 20 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The relationship between Russia and Uzbekistan are twists and turns. From asymmetric interdependence in the early period, to the alienation and deterioration period during 1996-2003; from strategic partners relationship in 2004, to estranged from Russia in 2008, until 2012 Uzbekistan exited from CSTO. It is not hard to see, the factors like security issues and 100 years common history are favorable ones to promote the relationship development between Russia and Uzbekistan. And the strategic conflict between the two countries and the impact of external forces lead to the alienation of the relationship. Recently, Uzbekistan would not necessarily alienate from Russia. The relationship between the two countries will continue to strengthen, especially the keeping of close cooperation in the bilateral level. But in the long run, the friendship may not be continued.
