Spatial assessment of Groundwater Quantity and Quality: A case study in parts of Chidambaram Taluk, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu, India

2021
The purpose of this study was to determine the geophysical and geochemical characteristics of the groundwater quantity, quality analysis using GIS (Geographical Information System), in parts of Chidambaram taluk, Cuddalore district. The (vertical electrical soundings) VES was carried out at 10 locations to understand the subsurface lithology. GIS were used to determine the geospatial changes and physico-chemical characteristics in our study area such as Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3−, Cl−, Na+, K+, SO42−, NO3−, pH, EC and TDS. From iso-resistivity spatial plot results, it is found that the northern part of our study area shows saline intrusion. The hydrochemical study reveals that most of the samples are found suitable for drinking in our study area. The ionic concentration was found to exceed the amount of permissible limit in few locations. A higher amount of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+ concentrations were observed in the northern part of the study area. It is helpful for the fast-growing population of the study area to better human beings and the ecosystem.
