La construcción narrativa de la identidad en un contexto educativo intercultural = The narrative construction of identity in a intercultural educative setting

2010
This paper describes and illustrates a theoretical model in order to understand the functions of identity, as well as the psychosocial mechanisms associated to its construction: “Bifunctional and Evolutionary Model of Mediated Identity” (MEBIM). The identity, narratively mediated fulfils a function with regards to one’s own life, as well as a social-cultural function related to the search for recognition of the rights of social groups at which they feel attached. Factors associated to the construction of personal identity (possible self, vital transitions, attachments) and socio-cultural (action-transformation and symbolic identification) based on 12 biographies with indigenous and mestizos of the Intercultural University of Chiapas (Mexico) are illustrated. It is suggested that in formal educative contexts, personal and socio-cultural narratives be encouraged with the purpose of optimizing identity in a world at the same time global and plural.
