Lateral resistance of the screwed connections of original bamboo

2021
Abstract This study experimentally investigates the lateral resistance of the screwed connections of original bamboo. Eighteen bamboo-to-bamboo and nine bamboo-to-steel connection specimens are tested using lateral resistance tests. The properties of the original bamboo screwed connections are examined with respect to the effects of screw type, screw diameter, and steel plate thickness. All bamboo-to-bamboo connections showed rotation of the screw and dowel-bearing failure of the bamboo. The bamboo-to-steel connections show bending failure of the screw with the increase in steel plate thickness. The screw diameter and steel plate thickness show a positive correlation with the maximum and yield loads and a negative one with ductility. This paper presents theoretical formulas that can predict the bearing capacities of the specimens better than NDS-2018 and Eurocode 5. The Folz formula can effectively simulate the load-slip behavior of the original bamboo screwed connection.
