Is the midwife's belief in normal birth becoming extinct?

2018
Reflecting on normal birth as I begin to write this piece, I am unsure how to begin. What is a normal birth? Does it even exist anymore? My vision of a normal birth definitely does not exist in the majority of maternity facilities in Australia. In my opinion, it is extremely unlikely for a woman to experience a normal birth in Australia unless she is birthing at home with a privately practising midwife (PPM). I know as I type this I am lighting a grenade and throwing it into the mist. This is exactly my intention, I want to generate debate and discussion as to what we, as midwives, see as 'normal birth' and how we support and facilitate it, because in my experience I see little evidence of our profession doing this in practice.
