COLLECTIONS OF SCANDINAVIA IN AMERICA: THREE DECADES OF GROWTH, 1939-1969

2016
1939 William H. Carlson, then librarian of the University of Arizona, later to have a distinguished career as director of libraries of the Oregon State University System, gave us a solid and comprehensive survey of "Scandinavian Collections in the Libraries of the United States," in volume XV of Scandinavian Studies and Notes.1 Over the past three decades we have had some very substantial addenda to resources for research in Scandinavian studies in this country, and, further, older collections have been re-evaluated and analyzed. The purpose of this survey is to add to Mr. Carlson's descriptions of and bibliographical notes on the older collections and to comment on the development of private and public collections of Scandinavica in America in the last three decades.
