Performance analysis of OFDM/FHMA hybrid system operation in ISM band

OFDM/FHMA is proposed to implement wireless PCS in "pico cell" level to support voice and low speed data transmission, and high user capacity. This system is to be operated in the unlicensed ISM band of 2400-2483.5 MHz band. As a result, system parameters are chosen to satisfy FCC's regulated operation within ISM band operation. Rayleigh fading model is used to represent multipath fading channel within indoor transmission. BER performance of the proposed OFDM/FHMA hybrid system is conducted for 8QAM; 16QAM, coherent BPSK, and DBPSK modulation techniques in conjunction with Reed-Solomon forward error correction code. Raw data rate, bandwidth utilization, user capacity, and BER curves are calculated and simulated with respect to CELP voice coding (9.6Kbps) serial input data. Analysis shows high speed data up to 465 Kbps (utilizing entire OFDM block), 48 voice channels, and bandwidth utilization of 43% can be achieved using 16QAM modulation at BER of 10/sup -4/. Attractive advantages of OFDM/FHMA hybrid system are listed for its potential in future generation PCS. The analysis also concludes that the proposed system possesses the low speed data transmission capacity.
