Toward a mixed visible light communications and ranging system for automotive applications

Optical Wireless Communications are emerging as promising alternative to radiofrequency and microwave communications in order to respond to the increasing demand for data transfer and to the expanding area of wireless applications. In this context, this paper provides a short overview of OWC technologies and focuses on their usage in automotive applications. Thus, vehicular Visible Light Communications and Visible Light Ranging systems recently developed by our research groups are presented in order to set the path toward designing a mixed visible light communications and ranging system for automotive applications based on standard car lighting system.
