Development of New Cable Probe for Localizing Deep Buried Submarine Telecommunication and Power Cables

2018
Cable Probe made high accuracy localization possible with easy operation by a diver and simultaneously measuring burial depth of a buried submarine cable on the beach or inshore area. The current KCS Cable Probe has been used for the maintenance and repair operation for the telecommunication cables to localize buried cable and measure the burial depth since the development of it over 15 years ago. Submarine cable faults are mainly occurred by the snagging the ship anchors, marine construction works and the fishing activity. Also the size of ship anchor, scale of marine construction work and fishing activity have been increasing. In recant year, according to these reasons, submarine cables are buried under 10 meters seabed to prevent the cable fault. The current KCS Cable Probe can be used to localize and measure burial depth of less than 5 meters and it cannot be used to localize live power cables. KCS has improved the current KCS Cable Probe which will solve the above-mentioned problems. The new KCS Cable Probe can be used to localize and measure burial depth of less than 10 meters and used for localizing not only submarine telecommunication cables but also decommissioned or out-of-service power cables and pipelines under supply of electroding conditions. This paper describes summary, specifications, operating principles, example of the application of the new KCS Cable Probe.
