Multi-resolution Texture Rendering for Medical Data

2011
Hardware-accelerated ray casting algorithm is one of the most important methods for direct volume rendering. Due to the limited size of video memory in graphics card, thus, the multi-resolution representation approach is employed for the large scale volume data. This paper proposes a multi-resolution texture generation method based on the flat blocking. The level of detail (LOD) selection approach will be achieved with flat blocking, and the flat blocking multi-resolution representation can be obtained. By using the brick texture reorganization operation, the compressed multi-representation texture can be generated, which provides the foundation for the adaptive multi-resolution texture sampling to render the high quality final image. The experiment results demonstrate that our approach can produce multi-resolution texture at a high compression rate, furthermore, the detailed information is preserved, so our approach can be applied to the large scale data volume.
