ROAD ACCIDENT REDUCTION TECHNIQUES

2002
This article describes products used in the UK to help reduce road accidents: high-friction surfacings and road marking materials. It was realised that most accidents occurred near road junctions or pedestrian crossings and that skidding played a large part. High-friction surfacings using bitumen-extended epoxy resins and calcined bauxite aggregate have been laid on various roads with considerable reduction in accidents and associated cost savings. Road marking improvements include thermoplastic spray and extrusion applied road markings which are more durable than painted markings and show improved luminance and retro-reflectivity. For the covering abstract see ITRD E120872.
