Optimizing System Efficiency Using Premium Efficient Motors

2015
Engineering, in its variety of disciplines, has always been to overcome challenges. The present overriding challenge is to maximize energy efficiency and reduce energy usage. A significant stage in accomplishing this challenge is the emphasis on the installation of premium efficient motors compliant with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association Standard MG1-2011 table 12-12 Premium Efficiency Electric Motors. All efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption are good. Increasing the efficiency of electric motors is fundamentally a correct approach. However, it is necessary that the effects of increased motor efficiency be fully understood and broadly utilized in order to prevent unexpected effects on the system that reduce or negate energy savings. Energy-efficient motors run faster than conventional efficiency motors; this must be taken into account when predictions of energy savings are undertaken. It is essential that the system as a whole is addressed for the purpose of assessing energy use and the potential for energy savings. Improved single-component performance within the system rarely produces the expected economies and may even be the source of disappointment when the predicted savings are not realized.
