Comparison of the ion microprobe with other instrumental techniques for solving surface diffusion problems

1973
From 17th conference on analytical chemistry in nuclear technology; Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA (23 Oct 1973). The equipment and procedure for using an ion microprobe mass analyzer for studying surface diffusion and for measuring surface diffusion coefficients directly are described. Surface diffusion coefficients of 3 x 10/sup -10/ cm/sup 2//sec and 2 x 10/sup -10/ cmi/sec for La / sub 2/O/sub 3/ and SrO, respectively, on NaCl at 693 deg K, are reported. A summary comparison of the performance of the electron microprobe, heavy ion- induced fluorescence, spark source mass spectrometer, and the ion microprobe for surface diffusion studies is given.
