There is great international attention about how Mass is implemented in the shipping industry from now on, as the development of the technology of Mass is accelerating. In particular, it will be essential to provide new institutional strategies and identify regulatory barriers, in order to facilitate and realise such autonomous technology. This study focused on the duty to render assistance in distress at sea, which has not been discussed so far, of the normative study related to MASS. Duty to render assistance in distress at sea has been considered as customary law, and its duty has been contributed to the realisation of humanistic value. However, the advent of MASS raises a fundamental question as to whether MASS is able to implement its obligation effectively. Hence, this study looked at practical limitations relating to the implementation of the duty to render assistance in distress at sea of the MASS and presented appropriate countermeasures.
