Introduction to the Digitalization of Power Systems and Markets

2021
This chapter introduces the book, which is about the transformation of current energy systems through decarbonization, and digitization supported by advanced information, communication, and control technologies beside higher penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) to the power grids. The integration of digital technology from the information and communication technology (ICT) sectors into the Green Shift has triggered an additional transformation wave by adding digitalization into the picture, resulting in the “Digital Green Shift” (DGS). The operation of the electrical power grid is in transition to a new digital era at the same time. The integration of digital technologies through the use of data analytics, connectivity, and control from ICT has changed traditional electrical power grid operations to become more intelligent, effective, and greener. The green and digital transformation of energy systems will significantly increase the overall efficiency of the energy infrastructure and reduce the cost of energy while at the same time address the global climate crisis by fully decarbonizing the world’s energy supply system. Digitalization will continue to find new answers to some of the biggest challenges in the energy sector.
