Construcción de la inteligencia de 0 a 2 años en un grupo de niños sanos evaluados con las escalas ordinales de desarrollo psicológico de Uzgiris-Hunt

2003
Introduction. The aim of this study is to present the qualitative characteristics of change in cognitive development as observed in a group of low-risk infants throughout their first 2 years of life. Material and methods. Healthy infants (n =24) were selected from a 1991 cohort who were born in 2 hospitals of Mexico City, this group was longitudinally assessed in their homes, with the Uzgiris-Hunt Ordinal Scale. Results. Object permanence scale and means and goals were found delayed at early stages but gradually decreased. All children reached the final stage of development between 18 and 24 months of age; this findings was also observed in the Gestural Imitation Scale, the greater difficulty was observed in the construction of the Vocal Imitation, Operational Casualty and Object Schemes domains, since only 16 of 24 children (0.67) achieved the last stage of development in the first domain mentioned 19 (0.79) in the operational casualty domain, and 18 (0.75) in the Object Schemes domain. Some delays were also observed for the Construction of Object Relations in Space Scale with 22 children (0.92) attaining the sixth stage at 24 months. Conclusion. The homogeneous sequences of stages among domains was not observed in this study, which is in support of the notion that development does not proceed uniformly along all branches and the need to study environmental contributions to this variability. At the same time, it is important to consider the influence of this early variability with regard to the cognitive construction in later periods of intelligence development.
