Performance of Damping Analysis Methods for Power System Dynamic Stability Studies

2020
This paper provides a comparative analysis of the Prony, Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), and Matrix Pencil Method (MPM) based Damping Analysis (DA) methods for electromechanical modes identification in an electricity network. Following benchmarking of these DA methods against the IEEE 68-Bus New England system, the performance of these DA methods was assessed on a real-world, large North American (NA) transmission network model's outputs. Observed study findings are summarized in the paper. The paper provides a useful reference for conducting power system damping analysis as part of power system dynamic stability studies.
