Homeowner Training on Operation and Maintenance of Aerobic Treatment Units

A training course was developed describing operation and maintenance of aerobic treatment units. The training program targets homeowners interested in personally maintaining their onsite wastewater treatment system. The training materials were developed using various references including the CIDWT curriculum materials. The course content, delivery methods and teaching effectiveness will be described. The conference attendees will gain knowledge on the operation and maintenance activities associated with operating and maintaining aerobic treatment units. This training course addresses the critical area of informing people about the need for proper operation and maintenance of onsite wastewater treatment systems. Advanced wastewater treatment systems are utilized on sites with limitation with respect to acceptance and treatment of wastewater. Training material development was supported through the Rio Grande Basin Initiative. Pilot training events for material refinement was conducted through the Plum Creek watershed protection plan.
