May terminologies protect us! The main factors that characterise a situation of diglossia cannot be perceived in the Basque Country’s language situation. The language situation we are experiencing in the Basque Country is not of a diglossic type. we have to come up with a new definition of the Basque Country’s language situation. In this task is it absolutely essential to agree on the basic terminology in the knowledge area of sociolinguistics, if we want to clarify, from a sociolinguistic perspective, what kind of language Basque is, what a speech community is, or whether the language is disappearing or being lost. •
