Mädchenschulen zwischen Traditionalismus und Emanzipationsanspruch. Forschungsstand und Forschungsdesiderata

2011
Studies on the effect of coeducational instruction reveal differences in achievement, interests and self-concept etc. between boys and girls attending coeducational schools. The present paper provides a survey about german and international publications focussing on single-sex education and its potentials establishing equal opportunities in the educational system. An uniform conclusion may not be drawn from these recent publications due to the heterogeneity of research questions, methods, samples. Altogether the results of the conducted studies about the effects of single-sex education remain heterogeneous. Nonetheless it is notable that girls-only schools seem to provide a more supportive environment and appear to promote the selfconfidence of girls in a stronger way than coeducational institutions. Parallels exist between these two aspects in numerous research studies from various countries. Anschrift der Autorinnen: Prof. Dr. Leonie Herwartz-Emden/Dipl.-Pad. Verena Schurt/Dipl.-Soz.
