International Finance for Biodiversity and the Global Environment Facility

This article describes the main aspects of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as the designated finance mechanism for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). It exposes existing tensions and gaps regarding international funding for biodiversity, notes a disconnect between the decisions on funding adopted by the CBD Parties and actual finance flows, describes challenges in tracking biodiversity finance and poses questions for further research on this topic.
