Relationships Between Inhibitor Structure and Its Effects on Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate Crystallization Kinetics

1994
Using a group of model inhibitors, bisphosphonates, relationships between the inhibitor structure and its effects on calcium oxalate crystallization kinetics were studied. The bisphosphonates were tested in a seeded crystal growth system in which the effects on the solubility, the growth and the agglomeration of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals are measured as three separate parameters. Changes in structure consisted of variations in the bisphosphonate moiety (containing hydrogen, a hydroxyl group or an amino group), and changes in the remainder of the molecule (rest group), using linear carbon chains of varying length, adding (methylated) amino groups, or including cyclic structures.
