Restauro ed isolamento sismico della chiesa romani ca di San Giovanni Battista ad Apagni

2004
The conservation principles for masonry cultural heritage buildings are often not compatible with correct antiseismic design requirements. In fact , the use of conventional methods leads, in most cases, to retrofitting interventions excessi vely invasive or ineffective. This conflict has been unfortunately demonstrated by the relevant dam age found in a large amount of above-mentioned structures, restored after earthquakes but ag ain seriously struck by subsequent not negligible seismic events. Due to those simple state ments, a different approach to the question has been pointed out, addressing to the use of modern antiseis mic techniques; they can reduce the dynamic actions transmitted by the earthquake, r ather than improve the structural resistance. After a detailed diagnostics and monitoring campaign, the Romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista at Apagni (Sellano, Perugia) has be en selected as a pilot application of Base Isolation by means of a specific sub-foundation sy stem, in order to respect as better as possible the building original features. This paper show s the main steps of the preliminary work and the design proposal.
