Antifungal activity of TiO2-CeO2 nanofibers against Candida fungi

2020
Abstract Herein, TiO2-CeO2 nanofibers (with 0, 10, 30, and 50vol% CeO2) were produced, and their antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida krusei was evaluated. The results confirmed the production of mesoporous TiO2-CeO2 fibers with average diameter ranging between 100 and 282 nm. The antimicrobial assay evidenced that the TiO2-CeO2 nanofibers significantly inhibited the growth of C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. krusei biofilms. The antifungal response against C. glabrata increased with CeO2 content, whereas for C. albicans and C. krusei no increasing trend was observed. The TiO2-CeO2 nanofibers show interesting antifungal properties and, thus, can potentially be used in biomedical applications.
