A practical algorithm for UPFC project location based on dc power flow

As one of the key procedures in preliminary design, the project location of unified power flow controller (UPFC in short) plays a decisive role in improving control effect. Usually the quantity of UPFC devices is limited considering social and economic factors, thus the optimization objective of project location is to make use of limited UPFC to the largest extend. Therefore, a practical algorithm for UPFC project location is presented in this paper. The load of lines is used as the weight coefficient, and the location adaptability index is defined based on weighted line outage distribution factor, which can be solved by DC power flow method. Then the recommended location is determined by measuring the index value. The results of an IEEE example shows that the computational efficiency is high and the method is reliable.
