In various embodiments, an electromagnetic radiation emitting device (10) comprising a carrier layer (12) and a first electrode layer (16) over the support layer (12) is formed. An organic functional layer structure (18) having a plurality of sub-layers formed over the first electrode layer (16). A second electrode layer (20) is formed over the organic functional layers structure (18). An internal coupling-out layer (14, 24) for improving efficiency of the electromagnetic radiation emitting device (10) is arranged between two layers (12, 16, 18, 26) formed of the electromagnetic radiation emitting device (10). The internal coupling-out layer (14, 24) is designed so structured in the lateral direction, that from the internal decoupling layer (14, 24) a predetermined pattern is formed.
