Going Underground with Murakami Haruki: storytelling, oral history and “the japanese psyche” after Tokyo subway sarin attack

EnglishMurakami Haruki, one of the most famous writers to come out of Japan, is responsible for the production of the most popular text exploring the social effects of the 1995 Tokyo subway gassing. In this article, I discuss Murakami’s role as storyteller, historian and cultural commentator, while also questioning the international over-emphasis on the literary and cultural output of one writer at the expense of a multiplicity of Japanese voices. francaisOn doit a Haruki Murakami, l’un des ecrivains japonais les plus connus dans le monde, le principal texte explorant les effets sociaux de l’attaque au gaz sarin dans le metro de Tokyo en 1995. Cet article revient sur le role de Murakami en tant que narrateur, historien et commentateur culturel de cet attentat, en meme temps qu’il interroge l’importance qui a ete accordee de par le monde a la production litteraire et culturelle d’un ecrivain, au detriment d’une multiplicite de voix japonaises.
