Er/sup 3+//Yb/sup 3+/ codoped phosphate glass waveguide amplifier

An Er/sup 3+//Yb/sup 3+/ codoped phosphate glass waveguide amplifier is reported here, which is fabricated by Ag/sup +/,K/sup +/-Na/sup +/ ion exchange and the process is demonstrated. This channel glass waveguide amplifier produces a net gain of /spl sim/2.1 dB/cm with an input signal wavelength of 1.55 /spl mu/m at an input power of -30 dBm for 110 mW of 980 nm pump power.
