Mechanical Properties of Cellular Magnesium Materials

2000
The mechanical properties of an open-cellular AZ91 Mg alloy with a very low density of 0.05 g/cm 3 were investigated by compressive tests. The strength of the cellular Mg was in agreement with the value predicted by Gibson and Ashby. The experiments by comparison of the cellular Mg with the cellular AI revealed that compressive properties of the cellular alloys were not affected by the ductility of the solids. Also, the relative stress of the as-cast cellular Mg was higher than that of the T6 heat-treated cellular Mg. It is therefore suggested that precipitation behavior of the cellular Mg alloy is different from that of the bulk alloy under the T6 heat-treatment condition.
