The Accident at Three Mile Island—1979

At 7:04 A.M. on March 28,1979, the Bureau of Radiation Protection’s emergency duty officer, a nuclear engineer, was notified by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency of an accident at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 reactor (TMI-2). He immediately contacted the control room to verify the notification and to receive detailed information. A site emergency had been declared because of high radiation levels detected on remote area radiation monitors in the auxiliary building.
