A Novel Microstrip Antenna Applying Metamaterial to Design Arbitrary Dielectric Constant Substrate

A novel design method of microstrip antenna with metamaterial substrates is proposed and analyzed. This method is different from traditional one, which applies natural materials as the substrates to design antennas. Dielectric cylinder arrays are designed based on the periodic waveguide theory to realize dielectric substrates with arbitrary dielectric constants. Furthermore, a microstrip antenna is designed with the application of dielectric cylinder arrays and the microstrip antenna designing theory, The modelling and simulations of the microstrip antenna have been completed. Preliminary results of the calculations together with the analysis provide a good demonstration and verification of the novel design.
