In view of the vast range of meanings attributed to the popular concept of civil society, this article sets out to explore in-depth study of the works of J. Keane, one of the most renowned thinkers in the field of current political theory. His work significantly contributed to the rebirth of the concept dur ing the final decades of the 20th century. This article not only explores the meaning of civil society as set forth in Keane’s writings, but also relates it to another series of elements linked to his general philosophical proposal to arrive at a model of democracy that the author interprets through an effective, and new, conjunction of state and civil society that pursues the maximum respect for a wide social plurality.
