Union Density Trends in Mexico

2021
This chapter focuses on the analysis of union density variations in Mexico over the period 1984–2006. Firstly, there is a general assessment of union density rates and trends in recent periods. Union density rates vary considerably depending on the sources consulted for the estimation. Secondly, the main factors accounting for union density decline in Mexico are assessed, according to previous literature in the area. Thirdly, union membership and union density rates are examined based on various ENIGH surveys (from 1984 to 2006) as the main sources to calculate this indicator. Data on union membership provided by the STPS is complemented with information collected from ISSSTE and INEGI to assess union membership by sector and labor organizations. Fourthly, relying on previous scholarship, original data generated, as well as discussions in previous chapters, I offer my own perspective regarding the main factors accounting for union density decline in Mexico.
