2013
This chapter is a statistical portrait of the judicial decisions of Justice Louise Charron between 2004 and 2011, the period in which she sat on the Supreme Court of Canada. It focuses in particular on quantitative data about unanimous opinions, majorities, dissenting and concurring reasons for cases in which Justice Charron participated, either as a panel member signing on to a judgment or as the author of reasons. The study compares Justice Charron’s profile of decisions to that of her colleagues on the country’s highest judicial institution. It hypothesizes that the small number of dissents and concurrences in which Justice Charron took part reflects her judicial philosophy, which appears to be oriented toward consensus-building, collegiality and the inclusion in her judgements of the ideas of her colleagues.
