Investigation and coping strategies on the prevalence of violent aggression which subjected in psychiatric nurses

Objective To investigate the prevalence of violent aggression which subjected in psychiatric nurses and analyze the related factors and coping strategies.Methods A self-designed questionnaire was used to research the character and the prevalence of violent aggression which subjected in 175 psychiatric nurses.Results The general incidence of violent aggression which subjected in psychiatric nurses was 86.5%.The incidence was higher in psychiatric nurses whose body height was less than 175cm and seniority was less than 5 years.The violent aggression occurred easily in night shift than in daily relay.91.3% psychiatric inpatients with aggressive behaviors whose ages was between 20 ~ 50 years old.Female patients used much verbal aggression and male patients used much behavioral aggression.71.2% violent aggression occurred in acute phase of disease.28.8% violent aggression was relevant to the nurses'attitudes.The psychiatric nurses usually had negative psychic reaction after violent aggression.Conclusions The incidence of violent aggression which subjected in psychiatric nurses was much higher.Some effective factors such as nurses'body height,working time and stage,the psychiatric inpatients'condition,the nurses'attitudes etc.were related to the violent aggression.Effective preventative measures and psychological support to aim direcdy at psychiatric nurses should be adopted to reduce violent aggression of psychiatric inpatients.
