Reducing waste in fresh produce processing and households through use of waste as animal feed

2014
Abstract: Byproducts of the food industry are important sources of animal feed. Along the traditional food chain, many valuable energy-or protein-rich byproducts are generated during the processing of animal- and plant-derived foods. Technical developments are providing opportunities for innovative materials, such as byproducts from bio-ethanol production or new fermentation technologies. The composition of such novel byproducts must be characterized prior to implementation in feed, and their potential impact on animal health, the environment, and the quality and safety of the final product should be evaluated.
